Here we are, two weeks into the new year. What goals have you set for yourself this year? Are you ready to challenge yourself, learn something new, or go somewhere new?

Chances are unless we intentionally push ourselves, we're likely to set goals that are familiar and comfortable to us. We have certain beliefs about ourselves and our abilities based on our mindsets.

Therefore, your mindset dictates what goals you set for yourself in 2018.

We tend to set goals based on what we perceive our own abilities to be.

Take a moment to reflect on how other peoples' opinions and comments about you, and your abilities may have influenced your goals - personally and professionally. You may be able to see why you've made choices and set goals based on your mindset.

When setting goals, our mindset can either encourage or discourage us from trying new things, challenging ourselves, or discovering things we may enjoy or even excel in.

Therefore, it's important to identify why you choose option A versus option B. Is it because it's easier? Or it feels safer? Or maybe past successes or setbacks?

In her book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, Carol Dweck, author and Professor of Psychology at Stanford University, explores conscious and unconscious beliefs, and how changing our beliefs can profoundly impact our lives.

With a fixed mindset, we see our abilities as still and stagnant. With a growth mindset, on the other hand, we believe we can continually learn, develop, and advance.

By adopting a growth mindset, we're likely to try new things we're curious about. When we develop a growth mindset, we believe that through our efforts, even with setbacks and delays, we can achieve our goals.
 

Room To Grow

With a growth mindset, studies have shown that if we can see even slight improvement in whatever we're doing or attempting to master, we will develop respect for effort.

Additionally, instead of holding onto the belief that we're not good at a particular activity and it holding us back, we can see from our efforts that there is an improvement and growth.
